FAQ
How do I join?
To join, send us an email with your name to let us know you’re interested! Be sure to attend our general meeting, held in ENGR344.
How does joining benefit me as a student?
Spartan Racing BAJA is a great opportunity to learn real-world skills including CAD , machining, fabrication, business presentation, networking, sourcing materials, and team collaboration. Having these skills on your resume puts you at a major advantage when entering the workforce. BAJA is also a great way to network with peers, future employers, and recently graduated alumni as you work with them throughout the season. All in all, BAJA is not only an incredible project to be a part of, but a major step towards a successful career.
When and where do meetings take place?
Schedule
Meeting times change to best accommodate everyone’s scheduling needs. Reach out to one of our team members or follow us on Instagram for the latest updates.
Location
All meetings take place in ENGR 344 unless otheriwise specifed by team leads
*Schedules are set at the beginning of each semester and may change based on availability
How much of a time commitment is required?
The time commitment depends on your role and availability. Some members contribute a few hours per week, while others are heavily involved with design, manufacturing, and testing. The busiest times are during the final build phase before competition.
Do I have to be a engineering Major to join?
No, you don’t have to be an engineer to join! We have many non-engineering members who learn interdisciplinary skills through Baja. There are roles in business, marketing, sponsorship, event planning, and team logistics. If you have skills in fundraising, graphic design, or social media, those are also valuable contributions.
Can I join with no automotive or technical engineering background?
Yes! No prior experience is required. Baja SAE is a great place to learn hands-on skills, and many members start with little to no technical knowledge. The team provides training in design, manufacturing, and business, so you can learn as you go.
How do sub-teams work?
We have specialized sub-teams, each focusing on a key aspect of the vehicle. You can join one or more subteams by attending meetings and working with team leads.
- Powertrain – Focuses on optimizing the drivetrain and transmission systems to get the most out of a standard engine chosen by SAE for the race.
- Chassis – Designs and builds the chassis in a manner that ensures system integration between all sub-teams.
- Suspension – Designs and builds the cars suspension system using kinematic analysis and different CAE programs.
- Business & Advertising – Manages sponsorships, fundraising, marketing, and team outreach. The business team also competes in a sales pitch event at competition.
Where is ENG 340, 341, or 344?

ENGR 340, 341, and 344, is within the Charles W. Davidson College of engineering on the northeastern side of campus. To get to to these rooms, go to the 3rd floor and go towards the north side of the building (this is the opposite side of the main 2 elevators). Please note that campus is closed on Sundays meaning the building will be locked.
